5.0 star star star star starHe was fantastic. He explained my condition very well and helped me understand what is going on and what my future steps will be. I really appreciate the time he took and all of the questions he asked. I felt like the visit with him was like seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, it was just refreshing.

1.0 star star_border star_border star_border star_borderHe didn’t take very much time with me, didn’t seem to care about my smaller seizures. I felt he doesn’t really care unless your having major daily seizures. He didn’t take the time to hear about my other symptoms I’m experiencing. I wouldn’t recommend him or the center at North Western it’s a waste of time and money.

5.0 star star star star starDr. Macken is very knowledgeable. He made me feel at ease in his office and took a lot of time answering my questions about a variety of issues. And he took the time to walk me out. I felt much better about my condition after I left.

5.0 star star star star starDr MacKen is THE best Epileptologist in Illinois. I've seen many and he was instrumental in finally getting a correct diagnosis after 20+ years with epilepsy. Also he wasn't afraid to say my case was unusual/he didn't know and seek answers. My only complaint was that I had to drive an hour and half to see him, but that's now a moot point with telehealth visits.

5.0 star star star star starHe has worked diligently to find solutions for several medical issues I have, even ones he does not treat due to his area of specialization. I trust him totally and have a great deal of respect for him as a doctor and as a person.

1.0 star star_border star_border star_border star_borderDr. Macken was very impersonal. He did not seem to pay any attention to any concerns brought up and any questions asked were shot down. When asked about switching to pregnancy safe medications so we could start trying, I was immediately told I must get an IUD. He was not willing to try adjusting any medications prior to extensive, expensive testing. He stated it wasn’t believable that I had no triggers to seizures. I was very uncomfortable with how I was treated. I will not be returning and will not recommend Dr. Macken.

5.0 star star star star starHe was very knowledgeable about the literature on breakthrough seizures with our daughter’s current medications and his decision not to add any additional changes to the most recent one was such a wise one. We feel very fortunate to have our daughter be one of Dr. Macken’s patients.

External Professional Relationships
Pharmaceutical, device, and biotechnology companies frequently collaborate with basic scientists and physicians within an academic medical center to help advance science and improve patient care. These relationships are important in achieving scientific breakthroughs and in establishing the effectiveness and safety of promising new therapies. In order to assure objectivity in clinical research and patient care, the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine (Feinberg), Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, Children's Hospital of Chicago Medical Center, and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab have adopted integrity policies that require research and clinical faculty (in full-time, part-time, and unpaid/voluntary categories) to report compensated and uncompensated external industry relationships. Patients are encouraged to discuss these disclosures with their physician as well as to inquire as to how these relationships are overseen by Feinberg. To learn more about our Disclosure and Professional Integrity Policy, and the conflict of interest policies of our joint affiliate survey partners, please go to our Office for Regulatory Affairs Policies page.
